Thriving Beyond 50: The LifeStyle Program for Aging with HIV

Brandon Holmes

Aging with HIV presents unique challenges, but it also offers an opportunity for growth, empowerment, and connection. The LifeStyle Program is designed specifically for individuals aged 50 and older living with HIV, providing a holistic approach to wellness that fosters physical health, mental agility, and a sense of community. Rooted in inclusivity and patient-centered care, this program is changing the way we approach aging with HIV.

A New Approach to Aging with HIV

For too long, discussions about HIV and aging have been clouded by stigma and limited resources. The LifeStyle Program takes a different approach—one that prioritizes the voices, experiences, and needs of those living with HIV. By creating a space where participants can engage in meaningful conversations, receive support, and access valuable resources, the program ensures that aging is not just about surviving but thriving.

Mental Health & Social Connection – Peer support groups, virtual socialization, and daily check-ins provide emotional support and community.

Nutritional Guidance – Personalized nutrition counseling, cooking demonstrations, and access to healthy foods promote better dietary habits.

Technology Integration – Each participant receives an iPad, enabling them to join virtual events, telehealth appointments, and digital learning sessions.

Case Management Support – Personalized assistance ensures participants have access to medical care, medication delivery, and necessary social services.

Self-Care & Relaxation – Spa treatments, breathing exercises, laughter therapy, and meditation sessions encourage relaxation and stress relief.

Building a Community of Support

Aging with HIV can sometimes feel isolating, but the LifeStyle Program fosters a sense of belonging. Through in-person and online group activities, social outings, and meet-and-greets, participants build friendships, share experiences, and support one another on their journeys. The program also offers annual LifeStyle screenings and follow-up assessments to ensure that each participant’s evolving needs are met.
